12/2/2023 0 Comments 1 rated antivirus![]() It bought two independent anti-virus companies, Sybari in 2006 for 263 million usd and GeCAD Software in 2003 for an undisclosed amount but estimated to be over 180 million usd.Īnd this is only to build the product, maintaining it with proper, timely detection database updates costs a lot, too. For example, Microsoft didn't develop its own anti-virus product. Developing an anti-virus product costs a lot of money. This might be relating to questions other than whether Microsoft anti-virus is any good. I will let you know, however, I have worked in some very large, high-risk Windows environments and I've never seen a third-party AV used I would call it "good enough", especially if combined with the above security protocol when using the computer. But I cannot really see how Microsoft's anti-virus would be the best by any definition. In regards of the OP's inherent issue as to how to stay safe online: If you use secure passwords on all your accounts and don't download any files from any websites or emails that you are not absolutely sure are safe, and sometimes run Microsoft's anti-virus, you are already 98% safe. So, if you are making the argument that it's the best anti-virus, would you care to share on what you are basing that on?Īlso, OP might want to review those two links that I shared for some information about what could be the best anti-virus product. Or how about AV Tests website, their latest testing data is here: Īgain, looking at these test results, I cannot really see how one could call Microsoft's anti-virus the best. ![]() The link has the benchmarks, the methodology and so on. TLDR: Microsoft's anti-virus had poor to mediocre performance in both detecting viruses and on system performance as well, meaning that it slows down your computer more than many other anti-virus products. If we are talking about actual data, then I find it very hard to say that Microsoft's anti-virus would be the best by any stretch of the imagination.įor example, here is the comparison report from the end of last year from AV Comparatives organization: ![]() They asked for what is the best anti-virus product, and you suggested the one that comes with Windows. While I do understand and also support your point of view that with some proper online security protocols one doesn't really need an anti-virus, but that was not really what OP is asking. I know I did when I used Comodo back in the day. I personally would disable HIPS if you see your PC freezes though. Since it can be a pain to use though, you could also use Comodo. If anything, you can use Zonealarm, as it has the best firewall hands down. Why did they not fix it for Windows 10, I dunno. If I recall correctly, it was fixed for Windows 11. That being said, if you're using Windows 11, it should be fine. it can be "tricked" to allow access that it should not allow. The others here, they say it's overrated because they're knowledgeable and aware of the issues that can arise from shady websites, not updating Windows etc.Īs for those who says Windows Defender? It's been proven by professionals that network wise. For someone like yourself, it's good protection to have as a backup to you. I personally disagree with people saying paid AV is overrated. Although the question is: what websites ARE you visiting that are shady? THAT's what I wanna know.īut since your original question was about an AV, Kaspersky is definitely the best, hands down. And in the case of a shady website, prevent its script from running, unless you allow them to. But most importantly, I use NoScript which imo is great at blocking some many scripts a site does not need to use. And also, you can use KeyScrambler to hopefully prevent people from seeing what you type. I personally use, like everyone else, an adblocker. Thus, I can't really suggest that in a realistic manner. So delete your cookies I would say, but I am aware that would be a pain in the ass to do that every day. I've heard of hackers taking advantage of cookies on a person's own computer to use that information to outright bypass the needed information that would normally require someone to actually use the number and email. But the reality is that regardless of whether someone has 2 factor authentication, if your internet practices are shady, it won't matter.
